Twitpanto (Quickpost)

Had to come out of hibernation as this one piqued my interest. Those who did not grow up in the UK (me) might not recognize panto as being short for pantomime, a Christmas tradition across the pond (and elsewhere).

It would appear that some twitterers have organized themselves to bring the tradition to Twitter! Near as I can tell, they’re doing Cinderella and have a stage director and everything.

The festivities start at 2pm GMT on the 23rd of December.

#eden (Quickpost)

Eventually I’ll get bored of the twittermoms, but for now I just like to sit back and watch them take total control over Twitter. Right now they’re at about 15 to 20 tweets per minute.

#eden is the hashtag the women are using tonight to do a sitewarming for http://www.familyeden.com.

#womma is the hashtag for the Word of Mouth Marketing Association’s Summit and Research Symposium. (Hadn’t you heard?) From the site:

“WOMMA is the official trade association for the word of mouth marketing industry. Our members are the experts and innovators who have mastered the art and science of creating genuine customer enthusiasm, amplifying it, and sharing it with future fans. Our mission is to build a thriving profession based on best practices, effective standards, and ethical leadership.”

Lich King (Quickpost)

The most recent release from the online role-playing game World Of Warcraft was released yesterday. From the site:

“Blizzard Entertainment’s latest expansion to World of Warcraft – Wrath of the Lich King – adds a host of epic content to the existing game world. Players will achieve soaring levels of power, explore a vast new continent, and battle other high-level heroes to determine the fate of Azeroth.”

If you aren’t hearing from people you normally hear from, check to see if they’ve been pulled into the vortex that is WOW.

#ANITA

anita2This was a tough one and took a fair amount of time tracking down. Especially since I don’t speak Portuguese. The Anita trend began in Brazil Portugal with the following tweet from user @brunoamaral: “lembram-se dos livros da anita? que tal “Anita e o Twitter” ou “Anita aprende a usar o delicious” ? :D ” Which (very roughly) translated means: “Remember the books of Anita? How about “Anita and Twitter” or “Anita learns to use the delicious?”

Seems the Anita books were popular in Brazil Portugal to help kids learn to read. And Bruno asked what it they were done today? WIth more modern titles. And the Brazilians Portuguese took it up with great gusto:

  • Anita and PayPal
  • Anita and the Economic Crisis
  • Anita does Dallas (ahem)
  • Anita is BiPolar

You get the idea. Eventually they created a hashtag and it created one of the most rapid trending terms I’ve seen.

I’d really love it if any of our Brazilian Portuguese readers would give us a bit more background on the Anita books in the comments.

Follow #ANITA on Twitter.

UPDATE: Oh man, did I mess this one up. One thousand apologies and one thousand thank-yous to the people who have written in to say that this started in Portugal and not Brazil. (I am the stupid American.)

UPDATE 2: Corrections being made over at socialmedian as well.

UPDATE 3: That book cover? It’s a fake. Reads: ”Anita gets drunk”. I think I’m done with international posts for while. ;)

FINAL UPDATE: The original poster does a great #anita summary.

#boobs

If I’ve learned one thing doing this blog it’s that if something inexplicably trends, start with the moms. Last night some of the mommytweeters, starting joking around by tagging their posts with #boobs. And then all hell broke loose. The hashtag rippled through this (smallish) gang of merry pranksters, but once it started to trend, everyone piled on.

And some have picked up on it to carry the torch for #boobs this evening.

I reckon there’s a opportunity here to have some fun and to raise awareness for an issue. How about it ladies?

Guy Fawkes (Quickpost)

Really, really wanted to do Guy Fawkes justice, but the clock has run out on my day I’m afraid. From wikipedia:

Fawkes has left a lasting mark on history and popular culture. Bonfire Night is a commemorative celebration held in Great Britain (also occasionally in Northern Ireland) and some parts of the Commonwealth on November 5 in which people have large bonfires and let off fireworks. Fawkes has been mentioned in popular film, literature and music by people such as Charles Dickens and John Lennon. There are geographical locations named after Fawkes, such as Isla Guy Fawkes in the Galápagos Islands and Guy Fawkes River in Australia.

Yes, we take requests here at Connect the Tweets! Something going on in the Twitterverse that you can’t quite figure out? Drop me a line.

Movember

No, that’s not a typo heralding the beginning of a new month. Movember is an international charity-focused event centered around getting men to grow mustaches during the month of November to raise money for mens health issues.

From the site:

“The Movember event creates awareness around men’s health issues and raises funds for carefully selected beneficiary partners in each country that are also charitable organizations, with a focus on prostate cancer.

Since its inception as a formal charity in 2004, Movember has raised over $29 million (USD) globally and is continuously working to increase awareness of prostate cancer within the community and change the attitude men have about their health. “

There is, of course, a gallery. Oh, and lest you ladies think you can’t get involved, become a MoSista

Let me know in the comments if you’re taking part and we’ll see if we can’t get a page of Twitter participants up somewhere.

#NaNoWriMo

For ten years people have been taking part in NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. It takes place every year from November 1st to November 30th. The goal: write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. From the site:

“Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.”

What started out as a friendly competition amongst 21 writers in the Bay Area, has blossomed into an international event that brings in over 100,000 competitors, coupled with an amazing support structure through the NaNoWriMo site. The even has a most awesome program for Young Writers.

(If you’re a blogger and don’t think you have a novel in you, you might try out NaBloPoMo, National Blog Post Month. At least one post every day for the month of November.)

#badfirstdate (Quickpost)

Hardly needs explaining, but man this rose up fast… Some faves so far:

  • I though we were just hanging out. She though we had already been dating for a week. Ooops?
  • we got lost, tried to turn around, I got my 79 Caprice stuck in ditch and had to wait an hour before anyone could help us
  • took her bowling. Ran into her ex and she left me to bowl with him. Story of my life…I set ‘em up, others knock ‘em down.
  • a blind-date and she told me right away she was only doing it to make another man jealous. Then talked about him all night.
  • Fell backwards while sitting on an outdoor handrail, my purse also fell and hit me on the head. Later on, I hit a parked car.
  • He had no car, so I drove; then he forgot his wallet @ dinner. However, he was very sweet and 3 1/2 yrs later, here we are!
